Our work combines health, education, sustainability, reuse and intercultural cooperation. Each initiative is intended to create practical value while supporting long-term local independence.
Health
Accessing healthcare can be difficult when people do not know where to go, which treatment they need or how available systems work.
Bird Phoenix aims to help people navigate local healthcare services and connect with relevant treatment.
Where possible, community support may also help individuals who cannot afford necessary care.
Medicine
We recognise the value of both modern healthcare and Sri Lanka's traditional medical knowledge.
This includes Deshiya Chikitsa, a traditional Sinhala medical system with a history stretching back thousands of years.
Bird Phoenix seeks to support respectful dialogue, knowledge-sharing and appropriate access to both traditions.
Education
Bird Phoenix aims to establish community learning environments inspired by the Danish folk high school tradition and by Buddhist principles of reflection, compassion and personal development.
The goal is to create spaces where people can learn, exchange ideas and strengthen their communities without education being limited to examinations or formal qualifications.
Sustainability
We want to develop and demonstrate practical examples of environmentally responsible reconstruction and sustainable living.
These prototypes may inspire future homes, community spaces and local projects that use resources thoughtfully and respond to local conditions.
Livelihoods
Tourism is important in southern Sri Lanka, but depending entirely on tourism can leave families and communities vulnerable.
Bird Phoenix aims to support ideas, skills and initiatives that help people create additional sources of income and greater long-term independence.
Exchange
Bird Phoenix creates connections between people in Denmark and Sri Lanka.
Through cooperation, visits, shared projects and community activities, we aim to promote mutual understanding and meaningful cultural exchange.
3,000 years of wisdom
In Sri Lanka, Nurs Ellis works closely with a local Sinhala doctor. He holds an academic medical education, yet practises according to more than 3,000 years of inherited medical wisdom.
His clinic carries the philosophy that guides much of our health work: healing is patient, natural and deeply human.
